For years the rule was simple. Rank on page one of Google, get the click, win the customer.
That’s changing quickly. When someone asks “who’s the best industrial supplier near me?” or “how much does a commercial roof repair cost?”, they often never reach a list of websites. They get an answer from Google’s AI Overview, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or the voice assistant on their phone. They read it, decide, and move on.
Industry reports now estimate that most Google searches end without a click to any website. Each of those searches is a customer who formed an opinion about your business, or your competitor’s, without visiting either site.
And this makes sense. It’s almost kind of crazy to think that, at this time, being given a list of 10 or more websites that might have the answer we’re looking for is even something people would want to use. The thrill of “going online” has simmered down. Today, people want to find what they need, leave, and then move on… quickly.
At Webstix we’ve been building and marketing websites since 2001, and this is the biggest change in search we’ve seen. Here’s what it means for you and what to do about it.
SEO vs. AI Search Optimization: What’s the Difference?
You may hear two new terms:
- AIO (AI Optimization): structuring your content so AI tools can find it, understand it, and cite it as a trusted source.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): a narrower piece of AIO. It focuses on making your business the answer when someone asks an AI assistant a question.
Traditional SEO still matters. AI tools draw heavily on the same well-built, well-ranked websites. But the goal has shifted. Being one of ten blue links is no longer enough. You want to be the source the AI quotes.
That’s why we built AI SEO and voice search optimization into our SEO services alongside traditional and local SEO.
Why AI Cares So Much About Your Brand
The biggest lesson from AI search surprises many business owners: AI favors brands it recognizes.
AI assistants are built to give confident, trustworthy answers. To do that, they look for businesses that are:
- Clearly defined: it’s obvious what you do, where you do it, and who you serve
- Consistent: your name, services, and details match across your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and reviews
- Talked about: you have real reviews, real mentions, and real content that answers real questions
- Authoritative: other reputable sites link to you and reference you
Your brand needs to be everywhere now, which means social media, YouTube, and in other online communities your target audience / customers hang out.
A generic business with a thin website and a bare listing gives AI little to work with. A business with a clear identity gives the AI a confident answer to repeat.
Big brands learn this the hard way too. Several well-known companies moved most of their marketing into short-term, “buy now” performance ads and stopped telling their story. The dashboards looked great for a while. Then market share slipped to competitors who kept building recognition. Performance marketing captures demand. Brand building creates it. You need both.
7 Steps to Get Your Business Into AI Answers
1. Make your website AI-readable
AI tools rely on clean structure. That means fast load times, a clear page hierarchy, accurate content, and schema markup, which is behind-the-scenes code that tells search engines and AI exactly what your business is, where you’re located, and what you offer.
2. Build out your FAQ content
This is SO important. AI assistants are answer machines, so give them answers. A strong FAQ page and service pages written in a natural question-and-answer format are some of the easiest content for AI to pick up and cite.
If you’re going to build content on your website, start with FAQs, then do blog content – consistently.
3. Own your Google Business Profile
Google’s Gemini AI runs on a huge number of phones, both Android and iPhone. Your Google Business Profile is one of the main sources it uses for local questions. Keep it complete and current:
- Respond to every review, good or bad
- Add fresh photos and videos regularly
- Keep hours, services, and contact info accurate
4. Earn quality backlinks
When respected industry sites, local organizations, and publications link to you, it signals authority to both Google and AI tools. Press releases, partnerships, and genuinely useful content all help.
5. Publish helpful “how-to” content, including video
Content that teaches gets cited. Blog posts, guides, and especially YouTube videos (YouTube is owned by Google) give AI more material that points back to you.
6. Find out what AI already says about you
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google about your business and your category. Is the information accurate? Are your competitors mentioned and you’re not? That’s your starting baseline.
7. Don’t abandon SEO. Measure it.
If your current SEO and paid search are producing results, keep them. But watch the numbers more closely than before, because search behavior is shifting month to month. Make sure your agency can explain how AI search fits into your plan. If they can’t, that’s a red flag.
