Case Study

Magento + Sage ERP Integration for a 10,000+ Product Hoists & Cranes Distributor

A leading distributor of hoists, cranes, and material handling equipment partnered with Webstix to modernize their eCommerce platform by integrating Magento with Sage ERP. We built an automated integration that transforms more than 10,000 products — each carrying dozens of technical specifications — from Sage ERP into a structured, searchable, filterable Magento catalog.

The hard part was never the import. It was the mapping.

The Challenge: Technical Product Data That Has to Survive the Trip

The client managed over 10,000 products, each with detailed specifications, technical attributes, categories, and supporting information stored inside Sage ERP. Getting those records into Magento was straightforward. Getting them into Magento in a form customers could actually use was not.

Complex product data

Material handling equipment lives or dies on specifications — capacity, lift height, voltage, duty cycle, mounting type. All of it sat in Sage ERP in a structure built for operations, not for online shopping. The challenge was ensuring that data was represented accurately inside Magento's product model.

Attribute mapping

The most complex part of the project was mapping ERP product data onto Magento's attribute-based catalog system. Every technical characteristic had to be:
  • Extracted from Sage ERP
  • Transformed into Magento-compatible formats
  • Assigned to the correct product attribute and attribute set
  • Displayed consistently across every product page
Without proper mapping, the consequence is not cosmetic. Products become impossible to search, compare, or filter — which for a technical buyer who needs a 2-ton hoist with a specific lift height means they leave and buy somewhere else.

Data consistency over time

A one-time import is not an integration. Product information had to stay synchronized as updates were made inside the ERP, and maintaining that consistency across thousands of products required careful planning and validation at every stage of the import process.

Is your Magento catalog hard to search or filter?

That is usually an attribute mapping problem, not a Magento problem. We can audit how your ERP data lands in your catalog and show you exactly where it breaks.

Our Approach: Map Before Migration

Our team began by analyzing the client's product catalog, Sage ERP data structure, and Magento attribute configuration — before writing integration code.

Product data analysis

We reviewed product master data, categories and classifications, technical specifications, product attributes, ERP data relationships, and the existing Magento catalog structure. That gave us a comprehensive mapping strategy in hand before development started, instead of discovering mismatches halfway through an import.

Intelligent attribute mapping

Rather than performing a direct data import, we built a transformation layer that converts Sage ERP data into Magento's product model. The solution handles:
  • Attribute mapping
  • Attribute set assignment
  • Category mapping
  • Data transformation
  • Validation of imported values
  • Automated product updates
The result is that every product displays the correct information in the correct place — which is what makes layered navigation, search, and product comparison actually work.

A scalable, automated import framework

To process thousands of products efficiently, we developed an automated import framework with batch processing, error handling, data validation, duplicate detection, logging and monitoring, and scheduled synchronization. It was built to absorb catalog growth without additional manual intervention.

The Solution: What We Delivered

Webstix implemented an integration between Sage ERP and Magento that provides:
Automated product imports
Intelligent attribute mapping
Category synchronization
Product specification management
Automated product updates
Error reporting and monitoring
A scalable synchronization architecture
Customers can browse products with accurate specifications and organized product information — and the client's team stopped maintaining the same data in two places.

The Results

Successfully synchronized 10,000+ products
Automated product imports from Sage ERP to Magento
Accurately mapped complex ERP attributes to Magento's catalog structure
Improved product data consistency across both systems
Reduced manual product management effort
Enhanced product search, filtering, and browsing experience
Built a scalable integration capable of supporting future catalog expansion

Why This Project Matters

Product data is only valuable when it is accurate, organized, and easy for customers to navigate. This project required far more than importing product records. It meant understanding how Sage ERP stored technical product information, then transforming that data into Magento's structured catalog model without losing accuracy or usability along the way.  By building a robust attribute mapping and synchronization framework, our team simplified product management for the client's staff and created a materially better shopping experience for their customers at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Magento be integrated with Sage ERP?

Yes. Magento can be integrated with Sage ERP to automate product imports, attribute mapping, category synchronization, inventory, and pricing. The work centers on building a transformation layer between the ERP's data structure and Magento's attribute-based catalog model.

What is attribute mapping in a Magento ERP integration?

Attribute mapping is the process of translating each piece of ERP product data into the correct Magento product attribute and attribute set. It is what allows customers to filter by capacity, voltage, or lift height instead of scrolling through an undifferentiated product list. Poor attribute mapping is the most common reason an integrated Magento catalog feels unusable.

How many products can a Magento ERP integration handle?

With batch processing and incremental synchronization, tens of thousands. This integration handles a catalog of more than 10,000 products, each carrying extensive technical specifications, and was architected to support further catalog growth.

Will my product data stay in sync after the initial import?

That is the point of an integration rather than a migration. Scheduled synchronization jobs, validation, and duplicate detection keep Magento aligned with the ERP as products change, so your team maintains data in one system instead of two.

Do you work with Magento 2 and Magento Open Source?

Yes. Our team builds ERP integrations across Magento versions, along with Magento B2B features such as customer-specific pricing and account-level catalogs. Contact us to discuss your specific version and hosting setup.

How do I know if my ERP integration is worth the investment?

A useful starting point: add up the hours your team spends each week manually maintaining product data in two systems, then add the cost of the orders you lose when specifications on the website are wrong. We can help you size that during a free consult.
