Time for Website Updates!
We’re finding a lot of new clients who need websites updates done. They’re getting things crossed of their list, which is great because the sooner you make updates to your website’s content, the sooner you can benefit from it.
Don’t expect to get higher rankings the day after you update your website’s content. There’s more to maintaining a website than that and the results won’t come instantly – they may take a week or more. Also, the edits you do matter.
What Should be Updated?
First, just make sure the basic content is up to date. This will include:
- Contact information
- Staff / personnel information
- Hours
- Map to your location
- Products / services
- Social media account links
Second, once you have the basics done, go deeper. Updates pages like this:
- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- New products / services
- News / blog
The most important area of your website to keep updating is your news/blog area. Your blog is really just a tool – it allows you to login and post new content easily. The blogging software on your website takes care of making sure it’s in the right place and at the top of your blog archive. Again… just a tool. You need to keep updating it. If you’re not able to do this yourself, have us do it.
Plan to blog on your website at least once a week. This is the absolute minimum you should be doing. Websites / companies in more competitive industries need to be blogging 3-4 times a week or more as well as posting unique content on social media networks. If that seems overwhelming, then you might want to plan to either outsource it (again, we can help) or even hire someone in-house to do it. You might even be able to get an intern to help you but you’ll need to set them up with some exact instructions of what you need done.
Home Page Updates
Also consider making changes to your home page at least once a month. If you have a slideshow on your home page, you can have the images changed there. We have even worked on websites that change color with every season of the year. This might not be necessary with every website but it works well with businesses that are seasonal.
It also helps to update or tweak the description of your business every once in a while. Add a sentence or two, add some links or reword a paragraph or two. You want to show the search engines that you’re active with your website without going too crazy.
Conclusion
It’s best to have a website that easy for you (or a staff member) to update yourself but if that’s not possible, then it’s absolutely critical that you have some updates done to your website. At the minimum, once a month. You will only get out of your website what you put into it, so if you’re not doing much with your website, then don’t expect miracles. This is the world we live in now and your competition is doing more, which is why they’re beating you.
